Yesterday, I went to visit a place in DC called Karma Kitchen. I have volunteered and eaten here before and it is such a wonderful concept, I had to share it with my blog readers. Remember the movie Pay It Forward? This is a similar concept. Volunteers come together to run a restaurant (cooks, front of the house, servers) for a few hours on a Sunday afternoon. A restaurant volunteers a location and in some cases a cook or even food for a cause so much greater than them. You, the person who stops by*, eats delicious Indian food, communal style, and when it' s time for the bill, SURPRISE, it has been paid already by someone who has been there before you. Your task?? To pay for the next person's meal, i.e. keep the restaurant running to see another weekend by giving a donation. I sometimes worry that since the servers are volunteers, this sometimes get lost in translation (I know I had a hard time conveying it to the first few customers I had.) How much money would you be spending at an Indian buffet on a Sunday in DC? With drinks, tax, dessert and tip? How much for the love and genuine warmth you feel when you come in the door? How much to meet others, listen to their problems, celebrate their successes, become a part of their world, even if just for a few hours. Now think about how much your donation should be. (Note: It is not a $5 or even $10 dollar bill).
Karma Kitchen is the last Sunday of the month from 12- 3pm, @ 300 Mass Ave NE WDC (across from Union Station) at a restaurant called the White Tiger. Go. Bring a friend. This is not a request. You can not believe how good I felt yesterday, and how that has flowed into the week. I promise you won't regret it. Does it look like I did?
